A legacy feature redesigned for Fitch’s new analytics platform, rebuilt to eliminate recurring errors and align with modern workflows. Validation logic, guardrails, refined interactions, restored reliability and improved speed.

The Backstory

The original custom column feature existed, but almost nobody used it. To build a column, users had to leave the grid, wait for a separate screen to load, configure without guidance, save, return, re-add the column into their view, reload the grid and often end up with blank results.

The redesign helped unify an older workflow into the modern system, setting a foundation for consistent data validation across modules.

The Challenge

  • High error rates in critical workflows slowed delivery and increased QA overhead.

  • Validation logic was inconsistent across modules.

  • Legacy UI patterns created ambiguity and user confusion.

Identify

Users had to leave the data grid to build a custom column

Simplify

Context-switching was confusing, time-consuming, and discouraged use

Safeguard

Embedded the custom column builder directly into the existing columns panel

Scale

Kept users in flow, made the feature feel like a natural extension of the grid

The Results

  • Task time reduced by 80%+. What once took several minutes now takes seconds.

  • Feature discoverability increased. Users no longer needed to hunt for hidden icons or leave the grid.

  • Errors eliminated. Guardrails and validation stopped invalid outcomes at the source.
